Specialty courses are designed to expand your diving horizons and maximize your fun while scuba diving! Explore shipwrecks…cruise along deep walls…perfect your navigational skills…extend your dive season and stay warm and dry by learning how to dive in a dry suit…take underwater photos!

Course fees include:

All specialty courses at Professional Scuba Instruction include the required student materials, knowledge development, certification dives, certification processing fee, scuba cylinders, and weights.

What you need to provide:
  • All scuba equipment (rentals available) except tanks and weights.
  • Personal gear – mask, open-heel fins with boots, snorkel, and appropriate wetsuit
  • Entrance fees to the quarry (or boat charter fee, if boat diving)
  • Air fill(s) if necessary
  • There may be some specialty equipment required depending on the elective dives selected.

Cavern Diver:
Imagine swimming between stalactites and stalagmites, your dive light illuminating the way, as you lay line marking the route back to open water… In the Cavern Diver course, you will learn how to plan and organize cavern dives, and you will develop skills regarding navigation and line protocol within a cavern, use of special equipment such as lights, reels, and guidelines, and emergency procedures.

Additional gear requirement: lights, reel (rentals available)
Minimum age: 18
Prerequisite: Advanced Open Water (or equivalent)
 
 
 
Deep Diver:
During your Deep Diver course, you will develop the knowledge and necessary skills to safely execute deep dives. This course has 4 open water dives for certification with a maximum depth of 130’. By having your Deep Diver specialty certification, you will be able to enjoy many popular wreck diving sites that lie in deeper water, which is why it pairs well with the Wreck Diver specialty. Students can package the Deep Diver and Wreck Diver course for a reduced price.

Digital Underwater Photographer:
Taking digital underwater photos is fun and rewarding, and these days it’s easier than ever to get into underwater photography. You don’t need fancy camera equipment, or years of photography experience to get good results and capture your underwater memories. In the Digital Underwater Photographer course, you will learn about composition guidelines, exposure, white balance and more so that you get more “keepers” every time you take underwater photos.

Diver Propulsion Vehicle (DPV):
Gliding through the water expending no energy is a great feeling. By diving with a DPV you can cover more of the dive site with a lot less energy. In this course you will learn how to properly dive with a DPV and how to care for it. The DPV specialty course has 2 open water dives for certification.

Drift Diver:
Drift diving is relaxing and almost effortless – you just go with the flow! There are many popular drift diving sites around the world, and now you will be able to enjoy them too. In this course you will learn how to stay with your dive buddy and communicate with the dive boat during your drift dives. The Drift Diver course consists of 2 open water dives for certification and should be conducted from a boat, but is not required. Consider packaging the Drift Diver course with the Peak Performance Buoyancy course for a reduced price.

Dry Suit Diver:
Ever been cold while diving? Here’s the solution – dive dry! During the Dry Suit Diver course, you will learn the special procedures for diving a dry suit, and how to properly care for and maintain your suit.  This course has 1 confined water dive and 2 open water dives for certification. With a dry suit certification, you can extend your diving season and expand your diving destinations.

Emergency Oxygen Provider:
Providing oxygen is an important aspect of diving accident management. This course trains divers and those in a position to help divers (boat captains, lifeguards, etc.) in the proper use of emergency oxygen. It covers the recognition of the signs and symptoms of diving illnesses that are treatable by emergency oxygen and the proper technique to respond. This course is often taught in conjunction with the rescue diver course and/or a CPR/1st Aid course. This course is a must for someone who is planning on becoming a diving professional. There are no required dives for the Emergency Oxygen Provider course.

Full Face Mask:
The Full Face Mask course is designed to familiarize divers with the skills, knowledge, procedures, techniques, problems, hazards, and benefits of diving a full face mask. The course has a confined water component and 2 open water dives required for certification.

Additional gear requirement: Students must provide a full face mask for all training sessions.
Minimum age: 15
Prerequisites: Advanced Open Water (or equivalent) and a minimum of 20 logged dives with 5 dives deeper than 80 ft
 
Night Diver:
Your favorite dive sites are a whole new experience at night! Discover them all over again – different creatures come out at night while the daytime critters tuck away for the evening. During your night diver course, you will learn how to plan and organize night dives, how to use dive lights to communicate with your buddy, and underwater navigation at night. This course has 3 open water dives required for certification.

NITROX Diver (EANx):
NITROX diving has many advantages, one being more bottom time! You pay a lot of money to go diving, so why not stay as long as you can? During your Nitrox Course you will learn how to analyze your mix, and plan and conduct dives using oxygen mixtures from 22-40% oxygen. Also, there are no open water dives required for nitrox certification! If you are in the process of getting your Open Water or Advanced Open Water certifications, this course can be added for a reduced price.

Peak Performance Buoyancy:
By perfecting your buoyancy control, you can help save our reefs, dive more effortlessly, and improve your air consumption rates so your dives can last longer. During your Peak Performance Buoyancy Course you will develop and perfect your buoyancy skills. This course has 2 open water dives required for certification, but more dives are always encouraged. The Peak Performance Buoyancy specialty is a great course for both newly certified divers and experienced divers. Pair this course with another specialty for a reduced price.

Search and Recovery:
Have you ever lost something in the water? Rather than swimming around haphazardly, you could utilize methodical search patterns and lifting techniques to recover that “lost treasure.” During your Search and Recovery Specialty course, you will learn different search patterns and lift bag techniques appropriate for lost objects of different sizes and for different search areas. This course has 4 open water dives required for certification that must be conducted over two days. The Search and Recovery Diver specialty utilizes many different search patterns which is why it pairs well with the Underwater Navigation specialty. Students can package the Search and Recovery and Underwater Navigator course for a reduced price.

Underwater Navigator:
Do not get lost underwater anymore! This course is designed to teach you how to navigate underwater by multiple methods. Compass use is only one of the techniques for underwater navigation. You will also learn how to utilize several other navigational cues to help you identify where you are and where you need to go! This course has 3 open water dives required for certification that can be completed in one day. Learn how to navigate on wrecks by pairing this course with the Wreck Diver specialty. Students can package the Underwater Navigator and Wreck Diver course for a reduced price.

Wreck Diver:
Diving on wrecks is exhilarating. Wrecks are a glimpse into history – as you swim along the deck, imagine the crew that used to tend the lines, the cargo it once carried, and maybe the storm that led to its demise. During your Wreck Diver course you will learn the proper techniques to perform wreck surveys, map wrecks, and use a reel to lay line for wreck penetrations. This course has 4 open water dives required for certification that are conducted over two days. The Wreck Diver specialty opens up many popular diving sites around the world but many lay deeper than 60’, this is why it pairs well with the Deep Diver specialty. Students can package the Wreck Diver and Deep Diver course for a reduced price. The Wreck Diver specialty also prepares you for bigger wreck diving adventures when you enroll in the Technical Wreck course.
